Reopening Responsibly with Contactless Temperature Checks

The “New Normal” requires new measures.
GigNet and True Face, powered by GigNet, have the technology you need to provide your guests with the contactless experience that will build your business.

Even as cases of the novel corona virus persist, businesses are developing and beginning to implement appropriate policies to reopen safely in accordance with government regulations. These policies, range from enforcing social distancing, wearing protective masks, proper sanitation, and cleaning practices to performing temperature checks and requiring symptom questionnaire responses at entry points.

Do Your Part

We all have a role to play in making sure our public spaces and businesses are as safe as possible in order to reopen and, more importantly, remain open. Here at GigNet/True Face, we have dedicated resources to developing solutions that can help our communities reopen safely and responsibly. One of the ways computer vision can facilitate a safe reopening is through quick, accurate, contactless temperature screening. Elevated temperature screening already exists.

Perhaps you have visited the doctor recently and someone measured your forehead temperature with a thermal gun when you entered the building. While performed with best intentions, there are two problems with this approach:

First, the employee stationed at an entrance is put at risk by being in close proximity to every individual entering and exiting the building. This employee is also unable to perform their usual duties thus reducing the productivity of the business. Secondly, handheld temperature guns that measure dermal temperature via the forehead are prone to inaccuracies and environmental variance issues. These temperature guns are susceptible to an increased rate of false positives (in the case of someone with a sunburn or who have been exercising produce an elevated temperature reading but do not actually have an elevated core temperature) and also false negatives (when the subject actually has an elevated core temperature but has been outside on a cool day and is producing a normal temporal temperature).

The GigNet Solution

To address the issues above, TrueFace has partnered with several thermal sensor manufacturers to create a temperature screening solution that is contactless and not prone to environmental accuracy issues. These thermal sensing cameras which can sit atop a tripod or be mounted to a wall do not require an employee to operate. This allows employees and guests to maintain social distance protocols and frees up the employee tasked with performing temperature checks to return to their normal responsibilities.

Accuracy is determined by several factors. Dermal measurement of the forehead using handheld temperature guns can be inaccurate for the reasons stated above. Other existing thermal solutions use a defined region of interest (ROI) in a video frame to frictionlessly measure dermal temperature. While this achieves social distancing requirements, subjects being measured can differ in height or may not be standing where they should in the frame for accurate measurement, which would require an employee to make sure the subject is within the ROI to produce an accurate reading.

Intelligent Imaging

By utilizing computer vision, we’ve added a layer of intelligence to contactless thermal solutions. Instead of requiring an ROI, we programmatically track the inner eye duct (inner canthus) through the frame and send streaming measurements back to the device via web socket. The inner canthus has been proven to reflect internal temperature more accurately than forehead readings and this solution results in instant, accurate temperature measurement.

This solution can also detect if subjects are wearing a mask and send an alert to security if they are not in order to adhere to safety protocols. Facial recognition can also be easily added to our thermal solution for businesses looking for a contactless method to identify employees (for time-keeping purposes for example) that does not involve touching a shared surface or device

While temperature readings are only one piece of the complete policies that will enable our communities to get back to normal, we believe that by creating an accurate contactless temperature screening experience, businesses and public spaces alike can more easily reopen and remain open.
